Year 2 - Blog 1

We were overjoyed to welcome our new Year 2 children back to school this term. They have been learning lots of new and exciting topics so far this year and we are thrilled to tell you all about it. That is if they haven’t already…

The children have adjusted extremely well, settling back into the school routine and we couldn’t be prouder. As a school we have been exploring Africa, with Year 2 delving into Moroccan life. The children have learnt to write their names in Arabic, decorated their own Tagines and explored what Harvest is like in Morocco compared to here in the UK. During our Topic day at the start of term the children spent the afternoon learning some Moroccan dance moves and trialling traditional Moroccan dishes.

Maths this term has focused on Place Value and Addition and Subtraction. Solidifying the children’s knowledge of number bonds to 10 and then to 100. We used our crocodile arms to learn the ‘Greater than’, ‘Less than’ and ‘Equals to’ symbols, with the children also taking their knowledge outside and decorating the playground with chalk exampling their fantastic Tens Frames. Literacy has been full of fun, covering poems, traditional tales and instructions. In our traditional tales’ unit, the children developed positive attitudes towards and stamina through writing character descriptions, exchanges of speech and versions of traditional tales. Across all units they have learnt how to assess and impove their work with simple additions, revisions and corrections to their writing. In the photos, you can see pictures of the children in Chiltern Blue having great fun acting out the traditional tale of Cinderella.

In Science we have explored the basic needs of animals, including humans, noticing that animals have offspring which grow into adults. One of our favourite lessons was learning the lifecycle of a beautiful butterfly, creating our own sequenced metamorphosis cycle. We have involved DT this term with our Topic of Morocco, extending the children’s knowledge of the country further. They have tested local harvest foods from Morocco, reviewing their taste, smell and texture. We also explored foods from around the world, with Pizza being a clear favourite of our Year 2’s! This developed an awareness of the diversity of food around the globe. Music has focused on the school’s African theme, looking into music around the world. Our Year 2 classes created some simple rhythm patterns and used percussion to compose and perform with different timbres. Religious Education this term has explored Christianity and kindness, teaching the ways in which Christians follow Jesus’ example of being kind. We learnt many new stories in the bible such as; Jesus healing the Paralysed Man, The Kind Man and The Prodigal Son, which were practiced through role play and group discussions.

What a fantastic start to the year, well done Year 2!
