Year 5 Antarctica Class - Term 1 Blog

This term, children in Antarctica class have been learning how to generate their own questions about Italy and Forces and to find the answers themselves using the Internet, books and practical investigations.  We have even learned about the Italian scientist, Galileo, and the experiments that he did with gravity.  We have recorded our learning in a variety of ways including digital books using Book Creator.

In Maths and computing, we were shocked to find out that the 8 richest people in the world have more money than the poorest 50% of the world.  We wondered how they could spend their money.  We used a spreadsheet with a formula wizard to create a shopping list, found the total and saw just how much money they would still have!

We have enjoyed reading the story of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, as told by Michael Morpurgo.  Inspired by Figaro, the Barber of Seville, we improvised our own operas based on the story and created masks for our characters based on ideas from Italian Comedia Dell'arte.

We have also really enjoyed learning about Black History this month.  Mrs Martin, our student teacher, has shared stories from her Grandma who is part of the famous Windrush generation.  She has also told us about an art gallery in Italy that exhibited more than 20 Rennaissance portraits that included black people.  They had always been there but visitors did not always notice or recognise them.  We discussed the importance of representation and what it means to us.

We also learnt about Leonardo Da Vinci's famous painting, the Last Supper.  We created our own version - a Year 5 Last Supper.

Finally, we learned that, if sea-levels continue to rise, Venice could soon be completely flooded.  We decided to put our skills in persuasive writing to good use and wrote letters to Boris Johnson, urging him and his fellow leaders to make the right decisions at COP 26.

Don't forget we also had adventures in Youlbury - what an awe-inspiring term we have had!

Year 5 Americas Class - Term 1 Blog

In Americas class this term we have been exploring our topic, Italy. Our work on Venice and the rising sea levels has tied in with the global goals and the COP 26 summit. We have created our own versions of Carlo Collodi’s famous tale, Pinocchio; these stories have been both imaginative and exciting. We have been looking at Italian culture through music, performing our own mini operas of Pinocchio. In DT we have delved into the mind of Leonardo da Vinci and his vast array of inventions. We have created our own catapults out of lolly sticks and designed our very own Rude Goldberg machines. In science, in keeping with da Vinci and also another famous Italian scientist, Galileo Galilei, we have had lots of fun discovering and experimenting with forces. We have designed, created and tested out our own egg-protecting parachutes!

It has been a fun term and we have learnt a lot!
