Gifted and Talented musicians in KS2 experienced live orchestral music in the beautiful historic setting of the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. The programme had the theme of Space and included excerpts from Holst’s Planet Suite, the Doctor Who Theme and Star Wars. There was also a percussion piece called Mare Tranquillitatis that was written and performed by one of the members of the orchestra who is only 16 years old. It is inspiring to think that some of our children could achieve that in just a few years’ time!
Children enjoyed seeing some of their favourite instruments such as violins, flutes, clarinets and French horns which they are already learning to play. Some are now thinking of taking up the trombone, tuba or timpani! They were particularly impressed by the conductor conducting the theme from Star Wars using a light sabre!
