Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole was a British-Jamaican nurse who became famous for helping soldiers during the Crimean War (1853–1856). She cared for the sick and wounded with kindness, courage, and great skill — all while facing unfair treatment because of the colour of her skin.
Even though some people tried to stop her because she was Black, Mary never gave up. She travelled thousands of miles, built her own hospital called the “British Hotel”, and became known as “Mother Seacole” to the soldiers she helped.
During Black History Month, we remember Mary Seacole because she showed bravery, determination, and compassion. Her story reminds us that everyone — no matter their background — can make a difference and help change the world for the better.
